Running On Icy Roads

A few years ago I started running. It has been one of the better decisions I have made in my life. If the weather is bad I do not shy away. If it is 34 degrees Fahrenheit and raining I get excited. I will ask other runners I know if they ran today, hoping that they say no and that they will ask me if I went out.

It has been snowing and icy here in Indiana so I finally re-signed up for a gym membership. I sat in my car before I signed up and I googled,

“is it safe to go to gyms in 2021?”

I scrolled for a few minutes, looking for an article that said what I wanted to hear. I took that information and I signed up for a gym membership again for the first time in a year.

Today I stepped out my front door. The sidewalk and most of the driveway was covered in at least an inch of ice and snow. I decided it would be better to go to the gym and run on the treadmill to avoid injury.

On the way to the gym I saw a few runners crunching along on snowy sidewalks. I did not regret my decision at all. I know I will go back out into the cold, but I am not risking injury if I do not have to.

I returned from the gym and as I carefully walked across my icy driveway, down my icy walkway, and almost went into my home. Then I remembered that I was asked to salt our walkway. So that is precisely what I did.

An hour later I went to get the mail. The ice had melted. Then it occurred to me that all of our streets had been salted. Sure there will be potholes to fix in the upcoming years, but that is what taxes are for.

My entire perception of the neighborhood was formed the instant I looked out my front door.

Before you judge the world around you, make sure to salt your walkway first.
