You Should Niche Down

Attracting fewer but better clients.

If you say you do a little bit of everything you are going to attract clients who do not really know what they want. Even worse you may attract clients who think that they know exactly what they want and they are going to send you to revision hell.

If you are a freelancer or own your own business the coolest thing about niching down is that you get to be super specific about what you want. On my most recent project my partner and I have developed a bit of a catch phrase.

“No one is going to give you your dream job, you have to create it for yourself.”

Before you enter into any intimate adult relationship it is important to define what you want, who you are, and what you will absolutely not tolerate. Think of an introductory meeting with new clients as a first date. You do not marry every one you go on a date with, but in order to find someone really special you have to weed through a lot of possible candidates.

When you are really specific about what you do a lot of people will pass you by. What is great about this is that when someone finds you and you are exactly what they are looking for they are going to be willing to pay for you. They have been looking for you for a long time. They have probably tried many other people who did not work. So you’re relationship is going to be really valuable.

Do you know who sells to everyone? Walmart sells to everyone. Do not be the Walmart of the creative field.
